2019 Tax Payment Extension
IRS provides extension for federal income tax payments due April 15
On March 17, 2020, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that certain tax payments could be postponed without interest or penalty. For Taxpayers, the due date for making federal income tax payments due April 15, 2020, up to $1,000,000 is postponed to July 15, 2020 regardless of filing status. For example, the $1,000,000 threshold is the same for a single individual, married filing separate and married individuals filing joint returns.
The due date is postponed only for federal income tax payments for 2019, normally due on April 15, 2020 and federal estimated income tax payments (including estimated payments on self-employment income) due on April 15, 2020 for the 2020 tax year. This also includes income taxes for trusts and estates.
At this time, the IRS has not provided a payment extension for the deposit of any other type of federal taxes, including payroll taxes and excise taxes, or for the filing of any tax return or information return. For tax returns due on April 15, 2020, an extension of time to file will need to be filed in order to protect from late filing penalties.
There has been no release from the states regarding automatic extension payments and/or filing of tax returns.
