Do’s and Don’ts with IRS Notices

Have you received a notice from the IRS or other State Taxing Agency?  The article below is a reminder from the IRS of what to do if you receive a notice.  These reminders apply to notices from the IRS or any other taxing agency.

Our top two reminders from this article include:

  • DON’T IGNORE THE NOTICE – These notices are often computer-generated because something on the return does not match an entry in the IRS computer systems.  Often, the IRS computer systems are wrong, and it takes responding to the notice to get the IRS (or other agency’s computers) corrected.
  • DON’T PANIC! – Receiving a notice doesn’t necessarily mean you owe money to the IRS.  Often these notices are “proposed” adjustments, and usually, with some explanation and providing of additional documentation, the balance due is removed.

If you receive a notice from one of the returns we have prepared and filed on your behalf, please forward all pages (front and back) to us to review and suggest the best course of action.
